Vice president of the republic of Malawi Dr. Saulos Chilima who is also a United Transformation Movement (UTM) has called on all Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) commissioners to resign.
Chilima made the call when addressing the media during a press briefing that is underway in Lilongwe at UTM’s headquarters.
Chilima’s demand has come following the Constitutional Court decision to nullify the May 21, 2019 presidential elections which went in favor of President Peter Mutharika.
According to the judges presided over the electoral case, the electoral process did not meet electoral laws resulting unduly elected of the said winner of the disputed elections.
Addressing the media this morning, Chilima said all MEC commissioners are not authorized to work in any government department as they have demonstrated unprofessionalism, hence a need of their resignation. Vice President Saulos Chilima says the court victory does not belong to petitioners to all women and young people who participated in the election.
Chilima said the court’s decision means that he has to work with President Peter Mutharika, The Democratic Progressive Party, Malawi Congress Party, other political parties and stakeholders for the betterment of the country.
