Sheriffs in Mzuzu have confiscated five vehicles belonging to Mzuzu City Council (MCC) over dues it owes some people, organisations and companies which accumulated to around K110 million.
These are seven separate cases which the court ordered the council to pay the stakeholders.
Lawyer for one of the people being owed by the council, Christon Ghambi, said his client Goodwin Mvula is supposed to be paid K15 million.
Ghambi said the council was supposed to build a fence for his client as part of an agreement when the council was constructing the Mzuzu flea market.
“The flea market is close to my client’s compound and they agreed that they would construct him a fence which was not done. We went to court and in 2018 the court ordered that the council should pay which has not been done, that is why we instructed the sheriffs,” he said.
Meanwhile, the council is contemplating applying for a stay of execution by end of business Thursday.
Some of the vehicles that have been confiscated include two service trucks that carry refuse from the city.
