Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioner Moffat Banda has told the Public Appointment Committee of Parliament that the official presidential results were signed the morning when the said winner of the elections Peter Mutharika was sworn in.

Defending their actions, Banda said the commissioners failed to sign the document before the declaration of the results despite that everything was ready because it was late at night.

“All the commissioners signed the official presidential results in the morning when the President (Peter Mutharika) was sworn in. We failed to sign despite that everything was ready because it was late at night,’’ Banda said.

“We had discussed before and the chair (MEC Chairperson) said it was late and did not want to labor us. So we agreed to sign in the morning after results were announced,”
