The United Democratic Front (UDF) has distanced itself from rumours hovering on the social media that the party has joined forces with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Parliament to rejected the proposed electoral reform bills.
On February 3, 2020, the Constitutional Court nullified the May 21, 2019 Presidential polls and called for fresh elections within a period of 150 days.
The Court also ordered Parliament to discuss and pass the electoral reform bills including the much awaited 50+1 electoral bill to restore sanity in the country.
Due to this, rumours on the social media indicate that UDF President Atupele Muluzi has formed an alliance with DPP ahead of the forthcoming fresh polls.
According to reports, UDF has also joined forces with DPP to shoot down the electoral reform bills expected to be tabled today in the National Assembly.
But writing on his official facebook page UDF Spokesperson Ken Ndanga rubbished the claims, saying the rumours are untrue.
“The propaganda that UDF has instructed its members of parliament not to support the 50 + 1 law is a sign of ignorance on the part of those peddling these lies. 50+ 1 is already a law so what is there not to be supported?
“In fact the official position of UDF is that is supports the 50+1 and that is well known to our members including members of parliament. Ignorance is a dangerous disease,” wrote Ndanga.
Meanwhile Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) will hold a vigil at Parliament starting from Wednesday to force the lawmakers to pass the bills.
