Finally the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has formed an alliance with the United Democratic Front (UDF) ahead of the fresh polls as ordered by the constitutional court on February 3, 2020.
DPP Secretary General Greselder Jeffrey confirmed of the development during joint media briefing held at Kamuzu Palace in the capital Lilongwe attended by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and UDF President Atupele Muluzi.
According to Jeffrey, the decision follows the will of followers from both parties.
“The aim is to work together for the betterment of the nation. The alliance will result in the two parties supporting of a single candidate for future presidential elections. Our democracy is under threat from people claiming they are fighting for the rights of Malawians,” said Jeffrey in the statement.
UDF Publicity Secretary Ken Ndanga confirmed of the alliance in a statement readout during the briefing.
“We are proud to say the DPP came from UDF. This is what our supporters and most of Malawians want. So we are happy we are doing the will of the people. We share common goals of like having responsible youths,” said Ndanga in a statement.
