Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah has said current MEC commissioners are ready to run the forthcoming fresh presidential elections in May this year.
Ansah’s remarks are coming at a time where Malawians have been demonstrating against her continued staying in office after the Constitutional Court and Public Appointment Committee (PAC) of Parliament found MEC and entire commissioner incompetent following the role they played in the May 21, 2019 elections.
Speaking today when she declared a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) councilor candidate winner, Ansah said the electoral body will soon launch the electoral calendar for the fresh presidential polls slated for May 19, 2020.
Ansah added that the commission has a deficit but was quick to say they are working with treasury and development partners to help provide the deficit.
She continued by assuring the nation that they will run the fresh presidential election within the stipulated time, a departure from their earlier plan to have additional days.
NICE Public Trust Executive Director Ollen Mwalubunju and the Malawi Electoral Support Network – MESN Chairperson Steve Duwa, separately that there is now nothing they can do on civic and voter education following absence of the electoral calendar.
