Livingstonia Synod of Church of Central AFrica Presbyterian (CCAP) through its Education Department, has embarked on K1.2 Billion inclusive education project in three districts in northern region which are Chitipa, Rumphi and Nkhata Bay.
Synod Inclusive Education Department project manager, Thomas Nkhonjera said they want to promote a conducive learning environment for about 6 000 learners with disabilities in northern region by 2023.
“We want parents of children with disabilities to join hands and support their children education,” he said.
He also said that they are targeting teachers so that they should know the way of delivering lessons to different learners with different disabilities.
“We are also targeting the teachers to embrace children with disabilities. They should deliver lessons in easy mode for children with disabilities to understand,” he added.
Chitipa District special needs desk officer Denis Mwenebiba said shortage of special needs teachers is a concern.
Mwenebiba, however, added that government is training teachers on how they can handle special needs children.
So far, the Synod has reached 2 560 learners in primary and secondary schools.
