Information reaching Faceofmalawi indicates that the Malawi Police Service (MPS) attempted to poison Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Chairperson Timothy Mtambo by forcing him to seat on wet chair.
According to information at hand, this happened as he was been taken to Lilongwe Magistrate Court from Area 3 police unit.
The substances applied on the chair caused severe itching on his buttocks and his hands.
Reports indicate that the HRDC leader started feeling itchy and noticed some swelling when he was in the back of a police van on the way back to Maula Prison.
One of the HRDC members Billy Mayaya confirmed of the development in a shot statement posted on his official facebook page.
“Timothy Mtambo complaining of severe itching and swelling after touching wet surface in police car,” wrote Mayaya.
Mtambo handed himself over to the police on Tuesday afternoon.
Meanwhile the Lilongwe Magistrate Court is today expected to deliver its ruling on bail application made by lawyer for HRDC leaders.
