DOWA – A 28-year-old man with mental problem has died while receiving spinal injury treatment after he was assaulted by his inlaws.
It is alleged that the relatives were taking a revenge attack on the man for wounding his wife.
Sub Inspector Gladson M’bumpha Dowa Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), said the deceased was Zinduma Dzuwa from Chikhungwa Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kalumo in Ntchisi but was staying at Chigudu Village in Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa District.
“The incident happened between March 4 to March 11 2020 at Chigudu Village. It is said that the deceased was mentally ill since October 2019 and on March 4 2020 he attacked his wife, Dorothy Kajawa of Chigudu Village, with an axe on the neck and head where she sustained cuts.” Explained M’bumpha
“In revenge attack, the victim’s relatives assaulted Dzuwa after tying up both arms at the back and he sustained a spinal cord injury in the process. Later on, one of his relatives from Chaguza Village in Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa District was called to take his relative (now deceased) to the hospital of which he took him to Dzaleka Health Centre where he was referred to Dowa District Hospital. Dzuwa died on March 11 2020 while receiving treatment at Dowa District Hospital” said M’bumpha
He said postmortem conducted at Dowa District Hospital established that death was caused due to spinal cord injury, distil arms and bed sores.
“Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for the suspects who are believed to be the relatives of the bereaved wife.” Disclosed M’bumpha.
