President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has refused to fire all commissioners of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for failing to handle the nullified May 21, 2019 Presidential polls as recommended by the Public Appointments Committee of the National Assembly.

State House Press Officer Mgeme Kalilani confirmed of the development in a media briefing currently underway in Blantyre.

“The president (Mutharika) finds it laughable for PAC to propose the firing of MEC Commissioners yet it is the same Commission that oversaw the processes that led to the voting into power of MPs and Ward Councilors,” said Kalilani.

He said the commissioners were not given time to prepare for the meeting with the committee and were not given a chance to bring their lawyers.
