Police in Dedza are keeping in custody a 48-year-old truck driver, Moffat Gonekela, for causing death by reckless driving.

According to Dedza Police Spokesperson, Sub Inspector Edward Kabango, a passenger who was carried on a motorcycle was killed when the truck collided with the motorcycle.

“The accident occurred yesterday around 4 p.m. at Katsekaminga Village close to Dedza Police Roadblock along the M1 road,” Kabango said.

The unregistered motorcycle driven by Nathan Gasten, aged 37, who was carrying Isack Gasten, 22 (now deceased) both from James Village in Mozambique, was coming from the direction of Ntcheu heading towards Dedza Boma.

“The truck driver collided with the motorcycle as he was trying to overtake, causing the motorcyclist to lose control, and then falling on the tarmac road.

“However, the passenger was pronounced dead upon arrival at Dedza District Hospital,” he added.

According to Kabango, postmortem results showed that death was due to head injuries, while the motorcyclist escaped with minor injuries.

Gonekela, driver of the truck registration number MC 5219 with a trailer registration number KA 6678, comes from Suza Village in Traditional Authority Kaomba in Kasungu.

He was due to appear in court on Wednesday (today) to answer the charge of causing death by reckless driving, which is contrary to Section 126 of the Road Traffic Act.
