Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has asked President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to honorably resign for failing to fire Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) commissioners and rejecting to assent into laws four electoral bills.
HRDC Vice Chairperson Gift Trapence said this in an interview with faceofmalawi reporter.
According to Trapence, Mutharika’s action is tantamount to contempt of Court hence he should resign.
“This shows this President and MEC Commissioners collaborated to manipulate the elections.
“HRDC will mobilise all Malawians to map the way forward with a President who disobeys court orders,” said Trapence.
He added: “He is disobeying court orders. He is in contempt of court. We can’t have a President who disobeys court orders. He should resign to protect the constitution.”
Meanwhile Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has penned the High Court seeking clarification on whether President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is in contempt or not for refusing to assent to the electoral reform bills.
