In a deplorable incident, a man allegedly misbehaved with a 25-year-old north-eastern girl hailing from Manipur in Mukherjee Nagar area of North-West Delhi on Sunday.
The affected woman claimed that when she confronted the accused over his misbehaviour, he spat at her and screamed ‘corona’. An FIR has been lodged against the accused and the police efforts are underway to trace the accused.
In her complaint, the affected woman mentioned she was returning from the local market to her house in Vijay Nagar after purchasing some groceries.
While advancing through a dim-lit stretch, a man passed lewd remarks at her. When she raised objections against his illicit behaviour, he spat on her and fled the spot after shouting corona, said a senior police official.
Taking cognisance of the incident, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed shock and urged the Delhi Police to trace the accused as bring him to justice.
Further, he also made a reference to fight against the coronavirus pandemic. “We need to be united as a nation, especially in our fight against Covid-19”, Kejriwal wrote on Twitter.
According to the details furnished by the girl, the accused appearance suggested that he might be in his early 50s and was on a white-coloured scooty.
The incident took place within the territorial limits of Mukherjee Nagar Police Station. The accused man has been booked under Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman).
The investigating officials have begun scanning footage from CCTV cameras installed in the area for identifying the accused, reported the Indian Express.
Despite having stringent legal provisions for crimes against women, the miscreants continue to act with impunity. In tough times when the country is battling with the deadly COVID-19 infection, some people, rather than paying heed to the sensitivity of the matter, are creating mockery.
