Information reaching Faceofmalawi indicates that Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe is set to close this afternoon, following the lockdown in other countries in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

The development comes barely hours after the Malawi Airlines suspended all local and International flights over COVID-19 pandemic.

This is likely to affect not only the business community but Malawi’s economy as a whole.

Last week President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika declared state of disaster in the country and banned all gatherings over 100 people.

Mutharika also ordered closure of all public and private school across the country to control the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Despite the order all the airports in the country were still operating thereby putting the country at risk of the pandemic.
