Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has said it has written President Peter Mutharika to hire new Chairperson for the body as the contract for the current commissioners will end in June.

This has been said by MEC Chief Elections Officer Sam Alfandika as he appeared before Legal Affairs Committee of parliament.

Alfandika also added that in the next fresh presidential polls MEC will not allow Tipp-Ex results.

Alfandika on the stance on majority threshold: ” At the moment we are doing the simple majority, until the issue of 50+1 is clarified by Parliament and the Supreme Court, we will consider the runoff but before that we are using simple majority in our processes,”.
