A tribunal of the Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda will this Wednesday meet to consider an application by the Electoral Commission (MEC) seeking admission of their South African lawyers to the bar in Malawi.

High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal Registrar Agnes Patemba has confirmed the Special Court arrangement on the application.

MEC hired the South African firm to represent in the Presidential election case which is slated for April 15.

According to information at hand, MEC will pay the lawyers money amounting to MK600 million.

Justifying the decision to hire foreign lawyers, MEC Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah said the electoral body was left with no option as all lawyers were occupied.

Meanwhile the foreign lawyers are yet to arrive in the country due to coronavirus outbreak which has seen many countries in Africa being on lockdown.
