Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Malawi are demanding an explanation over the reports that Beautify Malawi got K1 billion corona virus fund.

The fourĀ  CSOs; Malawi Law Society, Center for Human Rights and Rehabilitation, Youth and Society and Church and Society, which are lead by Moses Mkandawire said the reports are unsettling.

“We want to find out how the government decided to make the donation to the First Lady’s organisation. They need to tell us how that money would be used and who made the decision to make such donation,” he said.

Mkandawire added that there is a need of transparency and accountability on how the funds are used during this period of corona virus.

This comes amid the concerns that members of Cabinet Committee on coronavirus who update people on the disease through media briefings get K300 000 for each member after every news conference.

Government Spokesperson Mark Botomani dismissed the claims saying its not true and its fake news.

Beautify Malawi is being led by First Lady of Malawi, Gertrude Mutharika.
