United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Dr. Saulos Chilima who is also the country’s vice President has asked the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) to further slash downward fuel pump prices.
Chilima made the call during a media briefing in the capital Lilongwe where he highlighted a number of issues amid coronavirus pandemic.
In his speech, Chilima said the recent fuel prices reduction is not enough as the global market shows fuel prices has gone down by over 30 percent.
“Reduce fuel to K623 per litre petrol, K704 diesel & K504 paraffin,” said Chilima while attraction ululations from few party supporters.
Chilima has also asked the government to reduce price of water in remote areas with the hope of encouraging many Malawians to wash their hands thereby reducing further spread of COVID-19 in the country.
“Remove VAT & Surtax on all medical & hygiene equipment. Suspend turnover tax,” said Chilima.
Chilima has further proposed for lockdown at Capital Hill.
