Police in Mchinji have arrested two officials from the District Council on suspicion that they embezzled over K14.5 million for the council.
Mchinji Police Publicist Kondwani Kandiado identified the two as Eliya Phiri, a Senior Accountants Assistant and Victor Dinor Nsamu a Lands Clerk, who are both suspected to have embezzled K9,160,000 and K5,400,000 respectively.
According to Kandiado, between 17 and 25 March, 2020, the council had conducted an audit and the audit report revealed that the said funds were missing.
Later the matter was reported to Mchinji Police Station who arrested the suspects. The two have been charged with theft by public servant.
Eliya Phiri aged 47, hails from Chidyaki Village, in the area of Traditional Authority Wimbe in Kasungu while Dinor Nsamu, aged 40 comes from Chisaranje village, Traditional Authority Malemia in Zomba
