BLANTYRE – Police at Ndirande in Blantyre are keeping in custody 46-year-old Moses Jungu for allegedly causing death by reckless driving.

Inspector Edna Mzingwitsa, Public Reations Officer for Ndirande Police Station said the man is alleged to have killed unknown female pedestrian and injuring two others along Chileka- Magalasi road on Sunday April 19 2020.

“Traffic Police report indicate that on the fateful day, the driver, Jungu was driving a motor vehicle registration number CA 2117, Toyota Ist Saloon from the direction of HHI heading towards Kameza round about along Old Chileka- Magalasi road.

Upon arrival at Tem Company near Chirimba Bridge, the driver lost control of the motor vehicle due to over speeding and hit three pedestrians who were walking on the nearside pedestrian lane of the road going the opposite direction.” Explained Inspector Mzingwitsa

Mzingwitsa said following the impact, the unknown female pedestrian sustained multiple fractures on the right leg, severe bleeding and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital while the two other pedestrians, Francis Phiri and Duncain Lolanga sustained swollen left knee and painful right leg respectively.

“The driver escaped unhurt whilst the motor vehicle had its front bumper, bonnet, windscreen and front side passenger’s door damaged.

Jungu has been charged with causing death by reckless driving and will appear before court soon after police investigations are over.” Indicated Inspector Mzingwitsa

He hails from Mulinda village, Traditional Authority Nthwalo in Mzimba District.

Mzingwitsa has since said police is appealing to all drivers to reduce speed when driving along old Chileka-Magalasi as the road is still under construction to avoid accidents.
