Citizens for Transformation (CFT) leader, Timothy Mtambo, on Tuesday started a nationwide recruitment exercise of the interim district structures for the movement.

The exercise which started with the districts from the Northern Region comes barely three weeks after Mtambo announced the formulation of the movement which is aimed at among others drumming up support for the Malawi Congress Party and UTM alliance for the forthcoming presidential poll slated for July 2, 2020.

Mtambo said while he knows that the country is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, there is also need to respect the electoral process for people to make informed decision.

He said this is why his movement wants to make sure that before official campaign starts all structures at district and regional levels as well as at universities are up and running.

“We know that we have a challenge amidst us, coronavirus, but we also know that the election is coming very soon so we couldn’t wait. This is why we are here identifying champions, identifying leaders. We don’t have time to waste, so the whole week we are going to be in the Northern Region. When we are done with the Northern Region we will start Central Region thereafter we will proceed to Southern Region.

“We already said that one of the objectives is to kick out DPP [Democratic Progressive Party] from power. We want to give power to the people that can help our country move forward. So this is our immediate objective so it means that when the time for campaign starts we have to be running,” says Mtambo.

According to original Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) calendar of events for the fresh presidential election, the official campaign period was supposed to

run from April 26 to June 1.

So far CFT has established district committees in Mzimba, Nkhata Bay and Mzuzu districts and similar exercise is expected on Wednesday in Rumphi, Karonga and Chitipa.

Each district committee comprises 100 people.
