Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has accused United Transformation Movement (UTM) of discouraging voters in Phalombe as second phase of voter registration is underway in the district.
In a statement made available to this publication, DPP alleges that some people from UTM are telling people in Phalombe not to register in preparation of the fresh presidential polls slated for July 2, 2020.
According DPP Secretary General Grezelder Jeffrey, people are being told that president Peter Mutharika will not stand in the fresh polls hence no need for them to register.
“We in DPP are totally disparaged and we are not amused with such deliberate misinformation,” Jeffrey said.
The ruling party has therefore called upon Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to take action against the malpractice in which she said is contrary to the Electoral Code of Conduct.
In a related development, DPP has also alleged that Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is registering minors to vote in the forthcoming presidential polls.
“MCP is aiding and abating the process of falsifying information relating to the age of children,” she said.
Jeffrey continues alleging that MCP has “Intensified its usual campaign to encourage underage registrants”
Ironically, reports have been circulating that in the strong base of DPP children are being prepared to vote in the next fresh presidential polls by registering with NRB.
