In Solapur district of Maharashtra,INDIA -A 45-year-old man was arrested by the police for allegedly assaulting an on-duty police officer and attempting to set him on fire after an altercation on Tuesday.
The incident took place near Maloli village within the territorial jurisdiction of Velapur Police Station where police constable Naik Javed Jamadar (35) was patrolling to ensure compliance of lockdown orders.
While the officer was doing inspection of shops in the area, the accused, identified as Arun Singh Jadhav came there in his car and began hurling abuses at him.
According to a report of the Mumbai Mirror, the accused was annoyed as Jamadar had enforced lockdown guidelines by shutting down a beer bar belonging to one of his (Jadhav) relative’s. The accused snatched the police officer’s mobile phone and threw it on the road. Then he allegedly attacked the policeman with a blade leaving his face and left hand injured and began beating him.
Jadhav then took out a bottle filled with petrol from his car and allegedly poured it on the policeman with an intention to set him on fire.
However, some locals rushed to the spot and stopped the accused from setting the policeman on fire. He attempted to flee but he locals rounded him up, reported The Indian Express.
The accused has been booked under sections 301 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant to discharge his duty) and other relevant sections related to breach of peach and assault of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
While speaking to Mumbai Mirror, Deputy Superintendent of Police P Rajguru of Solapur district (rural) said that the Jamadar had suffered minor injuries in the assault and was administered treatment in a nearby hospital. Further investigation is underway.
