Chipata City Council (Zambia) on Sunday disinfected Mchinji/Malawi border post as a measure to control the spread of coronavirus.

Led by the City’s Mayor Sinoya Mwale, the city council sprayed chemicals to trucks stationed at the Mchinji border, border offices on the Malawi and Zambian side.

“Malawi and Zambia are like twins, hence we need to work together. In our multi-sectoral meeting between Malawi and Zambia on Covid-19 held recently, a Malawi team visited Chipata to discuss how we can work together in the prevention of the spread of Covid 19.

“And today we decided to disinfect both Malawi and Zambia border posts, as one way of demonstrating our solidarity in the fight,” Mwale said.

The Chipata mayor said he decided to lead by example, by joining the Chipata Council staff as one way of encouraging leaders to be in the forefront in the prevention of the of Covid-19.

“Disinfecting the borders is the first process and we will continue doing this,” he added.

Mchinji Director of Health and Social Services Dr Juliana Kanyengambeta applauded the initiative by Chipata council in disinsfecting the borders.

“The initiative by Chipata council of disinsfecting our Mchinji border shows that we are working as one team and by extending disinfection to our border we are rest assured that anyone coming from Mchinji border will not take the virus across and vice versa,” she said

Kanyengambeta said working with Chipata in the prevention of Covid-19 is important because there is a lot of cross border trade going on between the two countries, as people of the two countries mix on daily basis, hence the need to achieve the common goal of fighting Covid 19.
