Police in Lilongwe have arrested three employees of Lilongwe Agriculture Development Division (ADD) and a taxi driver for allegedly breaking into the division’s office stealing assorted items worth K5.6 million.

Lilongwe Police Deputy Spokesperson, Foster Benjamin identified the suspects as Ulemu Kawanga, 39, an enumerator, Bertha Kanyenda, 35, a messenger, Yesaya Banda, 19, a security guard and a taxi-driver, Alex Banda.

“Early Tuesday, Police got tipped that some unknown criminals were breaking into the division’s offices and stealing various items.
“Police detectives made an ambush and managed to arrest the suspects on the scene and recovered 40 cartons of pesticides which were loaded in a Hijet minibus registration number CP 4667,” he said.

He said further investigations led to the recovery of six more cartons of chemicals and nine digital electronic scales from Dedza and Mponela respectively.

Police are hunting for other two suspects who are currently at large.

Meanwhile, the suspects have been charged with breaking into a building and committing a felony therein and are expected to appear in court soon.

Kawanga hails from Thomas Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Khwethemule in Thyolo, Kanyenda from Mphamphi Village, TA Mwachoma in Rumphi, Yesaya from Kadzila Village, TA Mduwa in Mchinji while Banda comes from Chiomba Village, TA Chikumbu in Mulanje.
