In Georgia, America, father and son, Gregory McMichael and his son Travis McMichael, were arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for the shooting of a black man Ahmaud Arbery who was just jogging.
Ahmed Arbery’s murder has caused public outrage as if appears to be a racially targeted, hate crime.
Jasmine Arbery, Ahmaud’s sister confirmed to CNN that she was relieved with the latest development in bringing her brother’s killers to justice.
“It’s been a long time. It feels like it’s been a long time. So, this day was a turning point in recovering my brother’s case and getting justice for him,” she said.
She said she believes the shooting was a hate crime as Arbery was a black man and the two shooters are white men.
Arbery, 25 was taking a jog when Gregory McMichael, a former police officer and his son chased him down before a violent shooting ensued.
According to a police report Gregory McMichael, 64 is said to have told the police officers that Arbery resembled a burglar they suspected to behind a number of break-in, in the area.
After chasing Arbery down and confronting him, he is said to have struggled with Travis McMichael 34 over a shot gun.
According to McMichael, his son shot Arbery after the latter attacked him.
Arbery family attorney S. Lee Merritt has said that the McMichaels saw a black man jogging through their neighborhood and rushed to conclude that he was a criminal before shooting him.
Although, Gregory McMichael told the police that Arbery was a suspect in “several break-ins”, no such crimes were reported in the neighborhood a week before his shooting.
The police are yet to establish whether Arbery committed a crime at a home in the neighborhood, after the owner of the home said his surveillance system captured at least four short clips of a man who looked like Arbery “coming onto his property”.
Asked on whether the cameras saw the person who looked like Arbery committing any other crime, the house owner said they show him “trespassing.
The police report says a third man was involved in the chase.
