State Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima who is also United Transformation Movement (UTM) President has said he has put on hold ambitions to run for Presidency in order to support the candidature of Dr. Lazarus Chakwera in the fresh Presidential polls.
Chilima said this at Mzuzu Upper Stadium on Sunday during the first mega rally of Tonse Alliance which has nine political parties.
“For now my Presidential ambitions are on pause. I have done this to help save the country. Paja ndimanena kuti ndimaganiza bhoo heavy, so tiyeni tisapote Chakwera,” said Chilima while attracting ululations from thousands of people who gathered at the venue.
He then pleaded with UTM supporters to take heart and accept the decision to allow Chakwera to lead the alliance.
Turning to what the alliance will offer once voted into power, Chilima renewed his promise of cheaper fertilizer, loans for youths.
He said promises from the UTM and MCP manifestos will be merged.
“All government companies will start ticking again. I feel sorry that for five months, people at Mzuzu City Council have not been paid,” said Chilima.
