Vigilance Shighi is currently in police custody after she was arrested for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend to death in Umoja Estate, Nairobi.
According to the police, the 29-year-old woman and her 33-year-old boyfriend, Edward Okello, supposedly argued over food before stabbing him severally on the chest.
Okello is reported to have been working at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as an aeronautical engineer. He was rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital, where he lost his life.
Police reports at Buruburu Police Station indicate that he was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment.
The police said that a post-mortem would be done to establish the nature of injuries.
Shighi will be arraigned in court on Monday as the police seek more hold her in their custody while probing the incident. She could be charged with murder later on.
Neighbors were quoted saying that the two had been quarreling over the past months in their house.
The woman broke into tears when she was informed of her boyfriend’s death. Then, the people who responded to the incident and those who took the deceased to hospital alerted the police.
Police officers counting those from the DCI visited the house in Umoja and found a kitchen knife, which is believed to have been used in stabbing Mr. Okello. A pool of blood was also found in the living room.
The Buruburu police boss Mr. Adamson Bungei stated that they needed more time to interrogate the woman and get more evidence.
“She needs to be taken to a psychiatrist and undergo other tests before she can stand trial,” said Bungei.
Police reiterated that the woman had told them that she and her boyfriend had a disagreement and that she acted in self-defense.
Shighi said that Okello beat her first before she picked a knife, which she used to defend herself.
Domestic violence cases have been reported in most parts of the country during this Covid-19 epidemic.
