The High Court in the capital Lilongwe has adjourned to next week Tuesday a case on whether former Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo and 18 others have a case to answer over involvement in the cashgate scandal, the biggest corruption scandal in Malawi’s history that took place in 2013.

According to Justice Esme Chombo, two of the other suspects have failed to show up in court as they are reportedly sick hence the adjournment.

Chombo said the ruling is crucial and cannot be delivered in the absence of the concerned parties.

One of the suspects who is reported to be sick is Stanford Mpoola.

Mphwiyo and others are accused of theft of public funds amounting to K2.4 billion. The Cashgate scandal saw about K24 billion public funds vanish in six months.
