Livestock farmers have complained against low prices which have been attributed to the government’s decision to restrict buyers from other districts.
Speaking to The Daily Times newspaper, the farmers outlined that they have two buyers who buy their cattle ranging from K80, 000 and K150, 000 compared to a competitive price range of K200, 000 and K400, 000 in other parts.
On the other hand, the Malawi Food Security Outlook 2020 has noted that there is an oversupply of goats on the market, by desperate and hungry households who are selling the livestock at lower prices to make ends meet.
The findings by the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (Fews Net) show that prices are up to 50% lower in southern areas that have been facing the highest levels of acute food insecurity.
