Old Mutual Malawi has offered MK25 billion worth of free Mlera Life Cover to the country’s healthcare practitioners on the frontline in the fight against the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
Old Mutual Malawi Group Chief Executive Officer Edith Jiya confirmed of the development in a statement made available to faceomfalawi.
According to Jiya, the cover is with effect from May 1, 2020 and it will run for six months.
“We believe this intervention is timely and will assist in the cushioning part of the financial risk that our healthcare practitioners continue to face as they tirelessly fight this pandemic. The cover is for all registered healthcare practitioners under the Medical Council of Malawi and Nurses & Midwives Council of Malawi estimated at 25,000 and will run for the period of 6 months up to 31st October 2020. Our
priority is to financially safeguard the healthcare practitioners as they battle to serve the nation during this period.
“What this scheme entails is that, in the unfortunate event of losing the life of a registered healthcare practitioner registered under the cover, Old Mutual Life Assurance Company undertakes to pay MK1 Million to the healthcare practitioners family/beneficiaries,” reads in part the statement.
She added: “Unlike with traditional cover offered under the name Mlera Life Cover where a policyholder is required to pay premiums, healthcare practitioners will not pay any premiums for the six months free period.COVID-19, accidental and non-accidental deaths are covered immediately barring death due to listed exclusions.”
She said all registered healthcare practitioners under the Medical Council of Malawi and Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi will benefit from the Mlera Cover.
Malawi has so far registered 101 COVID-19 cases, with 33 recoveries and 4 deaths.
