The Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has distanced itself from a grouping that has endorsed the alliance of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and its bedfellow United Democratic Front (UDF) ahead of the fresh Presidential polls.

Some people claiming to be HRDC members led by Chifundo Kapesa held a media briefing in the north condemning former HRDC Chairperson Timothy Mtambo.

The grouping went further by endorsing DPP/UDF alliance of President Peter Mutharika and his runningmate Atupele Muluzi.

But HRDC distanced itself from the grouping, describing it as fake.

“We the HRDC disassociate from the alleged estranged grouping which held a press briefing today claiming to be hrdc. We have learnt with deep shock that some sectors of the society calling themselves HRDC Karonga Chapter organised a press briefing today expressing their concern over former HRDC Chairman #TIMOTHY Mtambo resignation to join front line politics.

“We refute this in strongest terms. the estranged confused group is not part of HRDC therefore they should be ignored. We are very much sure that these shallow minded young boys have been sent to tarnish the reputation of the people’s organization #HRDC,” reads in part the statement.

Added the statement: “We are currently informing our legal team on the matter. This is impersonation OF HIGHEST order. Whoever sent these guys will have to be brought to book. Malawian youths should not be taken advantage of by the rapid growing un-employment rate be used in spreading cheap and baseless propaganda. We will take them to task.”

HRDC has been in the forefront organizing demonstrations aimed at forcing commissioners from Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to resign for failing to manage the May 21, 2019 presidential polls.
