A Malawian student based in Berkshire United Kingdom, Thokozani Mapemba AKA Thoxy Des Santos who is pursuing Masters in public policy and is also human rights activist under HRDC joined George Floyd peaceful demonstration in Berkshire with placard APM and DPP we can’t breathe.
Many people around the world are joining the protest to demonstrate anger against institutional racism and many believe the George Floyd brutal death and the “I can’t breathe” campaign challenges other systematic oppression of people around the world. Especially systematic failures that have resulted in alot of people being victimised, marginalised and subjected to all forms of social injustices.
When we asked Thoxy Des Santos what inspired him to stand up for Malawians. He Said: “I was inspired by the black lives matters concept and I realised that black lives should matter anywhere not only in America and UK. I think in Africa most black people are daily being oppressed by oppressing regime like DPP. Malawi is in total darkness because of one person who is 80 years old and yet millions of young people have their future compromised because of one man”.
He continued…
I think these young people’s lives should matter. The death of George Floyd means end to continuous oppression by a system that takes advantage of the vulnerability of its people just like Malawi where APM and DPP takes advantage of millions of poor Malawians and continuously rob them. They will not mind if hospitals run our of medicine and people dying from preventable and curable diseases, what they care about is how to they maintain power or how do they get richer.
He argued “I think Malawi is still fighting and Malawians should continue to be united they have a common problem which is not just DPP only, but the system and the fight need to continue until we see that the president powers is reduced. We live in a democratic nation which is governed by autocratic and dictatorial policies and principles. Until the president will be accountable and until the president would report to the parliament and respond to questions by the house we shall continue to fight.Until deep rooted corruption is dealt with and the people responsible arrested and our tax money recovered we continue to fight”.
“We need to fight the system that even when UTM and MCP happen to be in government the system will not make them immune to justice.
The president powers will be reduced checks and balances will be made in a more transparent way.
That alliance members will not loot because they invested a lot in their campaign but they will begin to rebuild the country.
That people will be respected because their contribution and not their tribe, that people will be treated equal and their shall never be regionalism and tribalism.
That we shall have one Malawi cultural grouping representing all our heritage. That chiefs and the clergy will stand up for justice and not being used by politicians.
That all government parastatals will be independent from political manipulation. That we shall have not black out for a whole year and water problems will be gone.
That corruption will be checked across the institutions including traffic police officers who wake up every morning to collect money from motorists” Said Santos.
Malawians will be going to the polls in less than 2 weeks in a fresh election to choose their President.
