In a shocking incident, a woman, who was at her parents’ house, received a video call from her husband, who told her that he was going to commit suicide.
The woman immediately dialled up her relatives, including her father-in-law, and asked them to stop him. However, before anyone could reach his house, the man allegedly hanged himself to death from the ceiling.
The incident took place at BRS Nagar in Ludhiana within the territorial limits of Sarabha Nagar Police Station.
The deceased was identified as 34-year-old Amit Kalsi, an employee of a private school in Civil Lines locality of the city. At the time of the incident, his wife, identified as Davinder Kaur was at her parents’ house in Machhiawara. She had gone there on Friday.
While speaking to The Indian Express, sub-inspector Madhu Bala said that the now-deceased man made a video call to his wife on Saturday evening. He told her that he was about to commit suicide. He had made such threats several times in the past.
When the call ended, Kaur dialled up his father-in-law, who stays in a separate house and asked him to check on his son. However, by the time reached his son’s house, he had already committed suicide.
Kaur told the police, that her husband was “mentally depressed” and was not able to clear a debt of Rs 3 lakh. The deceased has not left any suicide note.
Police suspect that he was in an inebriated state when he hanged himself as some liquor bottles were found in his room.SHO Bala stated that he regularly consumed liquor. Inquest proceedings have been initiated under Section 174 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
