The Judiciary has expressed ignorance over reports that Justice Rezine Mzikamanda has started discharging his duties as Acting Chief Justice following a force leave of the current Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda.

On Wednesday, the state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) reported that Mzikamanda has started work as the Acting Chief Justice of Malawi.

According to MBC, Mzikamanda has assumed the office ollowing the departure of Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda who has proceeded on leave pending retirement.

Mzikamanda is the most senior Judge at the Supreme Court of Appeal after Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda and Justice of Appeal Edward Twea and three others who are all proceeding on leave pending retirement.

But spokesperson for the Judiciary Agnes Patemba expressed ignorance on the matter.

“Am not aware of that development,” said Patemba.

On Wednesday, lawyers across the country went on the street to express their anger over government interference on the duties of the Judiciary.

The lawyers vowed to side with the Judiciary in the country.
