The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has refuted reports hovering on the social media that Minister of Irrigation and Water Development Charles Mchacha has been arrested for planning to torch Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) main tally centre in Blantyre.
On Thursday, the social media was awash with reports that the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers have nabbed Mchacha and owner of Goodwill Funeral for allegedly attempting to petrol-bomb the tally centre.
But when asked today during media briefing at the main tally centre in Blantyre on the matter, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kaira trashed the rumours.
Kaira said there is no record at any police station that Mchacha has been arrested.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is scheduled to announce official results for the fresh Presidential polls any day this week.
Unofficial results of the fresh polls show that Dr. Lazarus Chakwera of Tonse Alliance is leading with 59.4 percent followed by President Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) with 39 percent.
