Former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has finally left Sanjika Palace in Blantyre to his private residence in the eastern district of Mangochi.
Mutharika left Blantyre Sunday, the same day the newly elected President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera was being sworn in as the 6th President of Malawi in the capital Lilongwe.
The former President was welcomed in Mangochi by DPP supporters who chanted songs of praise.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on Saturday night declared Chakwera as winner of the fresh Presidential polls after amassing 2.6 million votes against Mutharika who got 1.7 million votes.
Before the declaration, Mutharika held a media briefing at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre where he described the fresh polls as the worst ever.
Mutharika said some of the DPP monitors in Central and Northern Region were harassed by Tonse Alliance supporters.
He also hinted that one monitor died due to the savagely attack by Tonse Alliance supporters.
Meanwhile the Malawi Police Service says they are yet to receive an official complaint from DPP and its leadership.
