Mzuzu University students are challenging the institution’s decision to give one of its hostels to health workers suspected to have been in contact with Covid-19 patients.
According to a memo signed by the University’s Registrar, one of the institutions hostel named Norah will act as a quarantine center for Mzuzu central hospital health personnel suspected to have been in contact with Covid-19 patients.
John Gonapamuhanya Gondwe, President of Mzuzu University students body argues that management did not consult them before making the decision hence they are now seeking to challenge the same.
According to Gondwe, with reports to have schools open by 13 July, they need to have the hostel to house students when they get back to the campus.
While acknowledging the gravity of Covid-19 and the need to have the facility used as an isolation center, Gondwe said management needed to have consulted them before making the decision hence asking government to find an alternative place to be used as an isolation center for health workers in contact with suspected patients.
The global pandemic has this far affected over a thousand people in the country with fourteen confirmed deaths.
