United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi is under fire for blaming Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Chairperson Gift Trapence over surge in number of coronavirus cases in the country.

Muluzi in facebook post said Trapence will be reliable for any life lost for obtaining an injunction against a lockdown imposed by former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

But the post has attracted strong condemnation from all corners with others accusing him of going astray.

Chikhulupiliro Stanley Jnr Ng’ombe wrote: “It’s quite sad to hear you say this now why did you go out and campaign and yet COVID_19 was there you and your party may be responsible for the further spread and death so suck it up and be a man. Focus on your future that’s what friendly advise I can give you. I don’t get busy with politics but you are young and if you make a good plan you can leave a better legacy.”

Concurring with Ching’ombe remarks Billy Mayaya wrote: “Honourable Muluzi, HRDC sought an injunction against a lockdown with the aim of ensuring that the then Government had clear mechanisms for social protection of the poor and vulnerable. The Courts agreed with our argument. The onus was on the then Government to present a counterargument as a basis for vacating the injunction. Please do not embellish your position with wild exaggeration and conjecture. The issue here must be the need for accountability for the abuse of power displayed by illegal use of a convoy during a campaign. HRDC is awaiting your response on that matter. Don’t divert attention from that matter. We weren’t born yesterday!”

Another concerned by Malawian identified as Che Nkalapwaga Unejo wrote: “Chief, stop blabbering. Read the communication from HRDC! Does it make sense? If it does, talk to your attorney, If it doesn’t, talk to your attorney.”

Elder Ben Chitanda also wrote: “Those words should come from Mr Peter Sinosi Driver Kuwani of Mbakuwaku Movement for Development…..it’s the Only guy who respects the rules of Covid 19 during the campaign period not from you Mr Atupele Muluzi.”

Debate on the matter continues on social media.
