A Kenyan woman who murdered her four children has been committed to a mental institution.

Justice Richard Mwongo ruled that Beatrice Mwende who is currently being held in prison be transferred to a Mental Hospital for treatment.

A medical report produced in court early this week showed that Mwende is unfit to stand murder trial.

According to a report presented to a Naivasha court from Gilgil Mental Hospital where Mwende was taken for mental assessment, she had underlying issues.

The accused did not take plea after the report from Gilgil Mental Hospital said she was mentally unstable.

Prosecution counsel Alex Ndiema had told Naivasha Senior Resident Magistrate Lyna Sarapai that they were ready to charge the accused with four counts of murder.

On the fateful night Mwende is alleged to have killed her four children one after the other before going to bed.

After spending two nights in cell following the incident, she described her actions to have been attributed by “evil spirits” and also her ex-husband whom she said had been ordering her to do ‘queer’ things.

The deceased children were identified as Melody Warigia (8yrs), Willy Macharia (6yrs), Samantha Njeri (4yrs) and Whitney Nyambura (2yrs).

The case will be mentioned on September 23 to determine progress made in the treatment.
