US – A judge found a 15-year-old black student guilty of “failing to send schoolwork” and of not getting up to attend classes online in the United States. So the young woman was sent to a prison for minors. The information is from the ProPublica website.
According to Judge Mary Ellen Brennan’s decision, student Grace received a strict sentence because she was on parole for fighting with her mother and stealing the cell phone of another student at her school, who is predominantly white, according to ProPublica.
For the judge, failing to submit papers online was a direct violation of Grace’s probation. In the sentence, Brennan described Grace as a “threat to the community” and ordered her to be sent to Children’s Village, a juvenile detention center with 216 occupations.
The student has been detained since May 14, when she left the court handcuffed. In early September, there will be a hearing to review the case.
According to Grace’s mother, Charisse, the daughter almost never misses classes, but the young woman’s attention deficit disorder makes Grace’s focus difficult. In addition, the student lost her individual support when classes became online.
