A jealous boyfriend has been jailed for more than 13 years after he tried to murder his partner by slitting her throat in her own kitchen.

“Controlling and possessive” Karl Molyneaux stabbed or slashed his girlfriend nine times during the “horrific” attack in her South Shields home.

She had told him to leave as she wanted to spend time with her daughter.

The victim was discovered on her kitchen floor with life-threatening injuries by her two children, while former serviceman Molyneaux fled the scene.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that the 53-year-old ran to a nearby garage then phoned the police to confess what he’d done.

He told officers in interview that he’d snapped after feeling “rejected” by being told to leave the victim’s house and thought she was going to end their relationship, so wanted to hurt her like she’d hurt him.

The woman was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she underwent surgery.

Her injuries included an 8cm slash wound to her neck and a stab wound to her mouth which had gone through her cheek.

He pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder when he appeared in court in April and the case was adjourned until Wednesday, July 15, for sentence.
