Balaka Second Grade Magistrate’s Court has jailed a 35-year-old man, Kenneth Noah, for five years for setting on fire two houses belonging to his wife and his mother-in-law at Mpandasoni Village in Balaka.

According to Balaka Police Publicist, Felix Misomali, three days before the incident, Noah brought in a 50 Kg bag of maize at the house for food, but he sold half of the maize for beer drinking, a development that did not go well with his wife, Maria Lingisoni, 25.

“On the material night, May 31, 2020, Maria and her husband failed to resolve their misunderstanding, and the husband set her house and that of his mother-in-law on fire under the influence of alcohol, destroying goods worth K665, 000,” said Misomali.

According the police publicist said Noah pleaded guilty to the count of arson which led to his conviction and subsequent five-year jail sentence.

Noah comes from Kalimilamoto Village in Sub Traditional Authority Kuntaja in Blantyre.

Police reiterated their warning to people in the district to risk being prosecuted once caught breaking the law regardless of being marriage partners or not
