The court in Mulanje on Tuesday afternoon released on bail two DPP supporters who were arrested on Monday on allegations that they assaulted Tonse Alliance monitors during registration of voters for the Fresh Registration Elections in Mulanje.

The two are McDonald Namowa and Hazwel Mpando.

During the registration exercise, there were reports that unknown people assaulted Tonse Alliance monitors in some centres in the district.

The incidents happened on 1st May, 2020 at Chibanti, Nansato, Thawale, Misanjo and Khongoni primary schools but no one was arrested then as police told us they were investigating the incidents.

Two months down the line, police on Monday arrested Namowa and Mpando on allegations that they were involved in the attack of the monitors.

They are suspected to have assaulted MCP monitors Grace Chimwaza, Faston Mang’ani and Gloria Malikebu at Thawale, Misanjo and Chibanti schools respectively.

When the two appeared in court on Tuesday afternoon, they pleaded not guilty to charges of assault occasioned on actual bodily harm leveled against them by the arresting authorities.

They applied for court bails which Senior Resident Magistrate Shahida Hanif Bakili granted on conditions that they pay bail bonds of K100, 000 cash each, one surety each of K100, 000 non-cash and appear at Mulanje Police station every two weeks.
