A cat which was arrested and detained at Sri Lanka’s main prison for allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin and SIM cards has escaped from custody.

Cat detained for smuggling heroin

The smuggling attempt was busted on Saturday August 1 by intelligence officials, at the maximum security Welikada Prison.

A police official said they found just about two grams of heroin, two SIM cards and a memory chip in a small plastic bag tied around the cat’s neck.

However, Aruna newspaper reported that the cat escaped on Sunday August 2, from the prison room where it had been left.

Investigations are ongoing to establish whether or not the cat had been used previously to smuggle drugs and contraband.

Prison authorities withheld comment on the matter although it was also noted that the management of the correctional facility had reported an increase in incidents of people throwing small packets of drugs, cell phones and phone chargers over the walls in the last few weeks.
