The statement by popular Nigerian televangelist TB Joshua that he will reopen his church only after he “hears from God” is not surprising.
It is what most pastors do, especially Pentecostal ones.
They claim to await clearance from God, before acting on decisions made by man – in this case the Lagos State government, which says church services will be able to resume on Sunday following a long ban to contain the spread of coronavirus.
TB Joshua commands a huge following across Africa and his The Synagogue Church of All Nations has become a Mecca of sorts for those seeking healing and miracles. It attracts thousands of worshippers.
Some thought the self-styled prophet would have heard from God by now about whether to reopen his church on Sunday, while others are relieved that this has not happened.
It is hard to imagine worshippers adhering to social-distancing rules or keeping on face masks during the frenzied praise-and-worship sessions that normally take place in Pentecostal churches.
