Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) has asked President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to withdrawal his newly Gazetted COVID-19 Measures and apologize to the nation.

The call follows Chakwera’s failure to observe the new rules at Roseby Dinala’s funeral in the commercial capital Blantyre.

The funeral was graced by thousands of Malawians including Malawi Congress Party (MCP) supporters.

“The Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has today failed to lead by example by his failure to follow the newly Gazetted COVID-19 Measures. It would be difficult for him to expect citizens to follow his measures when himself could not comply.

“CDEDI demands the president to withdrawal his newly Gazetted COVID-19 Measures and apologize to the nation,”said Sylvester Namiwa in a statement.

Among the measures, government has ordered mandatory wearing of face masks in public and banned public gatherings of groups of than 10 people.
