Minister of Gender, Disability and Social Welfare Patricia Kaliati has reacted to a video that was making rounds on social media of a Machinga district family with six disabled children.
In the video seen by this publication Senior Chief Nkoola of the district was seen asking well-wishers to come to the rescue of the family of 8 which lives in a dilapidated house.
Writing on her Facebook page, Kaliati said after hearing the story of the family, she consulted officials from her ministry to come up with solutions that will put the family in a better position.
According to the Honourable minister, they agreed with the chief to allocate land for construction of a good house for the family.
“Firstly, we agreed with the chief that he allocates us land to build a good house for the family. As you saw in the video going around, the house this family rest on is not habitable,” Kaliati said.
She added; “We thought we should build them one good house and we set a timeline that it should be completed by end October”
In a bid to make the family financially stable, Kaliati said her ministry has agreed on putting the family on cash transfer.
On the children, Kaliati said they have agreed that they should start receiving special medical attention at Mangochi District Hospital.
Kaliati also enlightened the family and the community on the importance of using contraceptive methods.
