The police in Thohoyandou are investigating the deaths of Muvhulawa Mudzunga (90) and her daughter, Caroline Edzisani Muvhulawa (54), whose bodies were discovered in their house in South Africa.
Their bodies were discovered after Mudzunga’s other daughter notified her mother’s neighbours that her calls rang unanswered.
According to a statement by Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the neighbours alerted the police and emergency services were dispatched.
“The two bodies were found lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds,” Mojapelo said.
He added that preliminary investigations revealed that the murders might have been committed the previous day and that the motive for the killings could be witchcraft related.
“A manhunt was launched for the suspect(s) involved and a 23-year-old man was arrested on Monday night, 17 August in Ha-Budeli location. He accused the two women of bewitching him,” Mojapelo said.
He explained that the man is said to be the next-door neighbour of the deceased and was found hiding in his girlfriend’s house.
The man will appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 19 August, facing two counts of murder.
