Malawians on social media are excited following the redeployment of General Vincent Nundwe as the Commander of Malawi Defense Force (MDF).

Today, the State President Lazarus Chakwera re-appointed General Nundwe as MDF boss after less than a year he was fired from the post by former president Professor Peter Mutharika and assigned him for other duties.

General Nundwe was relived from his duties together with his deputy Lieutenant General Clement Namangale was later replaced by General Peter Andrew Lapken Namathanga.

Making his announcement this afternoon, Chakwera said Nundwe’s firing was not in line with the country’s constitution.

Reacting to the news, Lawyer Khumbo Soko who represented the state vice president Saulos Chilima in the presidential elections case said Chakwera has made the right move.

“The move on General Nundwe is the correct one,” said Soko.

However, he was quick to commend Nundwe’s predecessor who is also his successor for the job well done since his appointment.

“And Kudos to General Namathanga for leading his troops well in securing the fresh presidential election and managing the transition. It says a lot about the professionalism of the man and of our highly esteemed military. Wish he hadn’t been caught up in the mess,” he said.

On his remarks the Dean of Law at Chancellor College Dr. Sunduzwayo Madise recalled what he once said after former head of state Mutharika fired Nundwe and his deputy Namangale.

“I once warned on the dangers of a caretaker president making substantive appointments,” recalled the Dr. Madise, while saying that he is has always been fascinated by the hand of Nundwe which was constantly giving gestures when making a point.

One of the big names in the media, Innocent Mphongolo was quick to remind people not to undermine the job done by General Namathanga.

“General Vincent Nundwe is back. Nevertheless let’s not be persuaded to undermine General Namathanga’s contribution particularly during fresh presidential elections,” Mphongolo said.

Human rights defender cum politician Timothy Mtambo congratulated Nundwe as he referred him as the people’s general.

Nundwe succeeded General Griffin Supuni after junior MDF soldiers protested against his (Supuni) administration and was later appointed as the president’s advisor on national security by Mutharika.

Nundwe became the dearest man of many Malawians following a role he played in protecting the constitution when Malawi was going through ‘constitution crisis’ aftermath of May 21, 2019 tripartite elections.
